ABOUT THE RACE
The original Magoebas Ultra...
The MU60 is the race that embodies the spirit of the Magoebas Ultra. This demanding ultra-distance journey takes runners through the heart of Magoebaskloof, linking together some of the region's most beautiful and remote trails. Long climbs, technical sections, and ever-changing landscapes make for a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience. It is the perfect race for runners looking to test themselves beyond the marathon distance while embracing the adventure that trail running is all about.
Runners will traverse dense forest canopy, cross mountain streams, ascend exposed ridgelines, and descend into hidden valleys — all while surrounded by some of South Africa's most pristine and untouched wilderness.
Route Description
The MU60 is divided into four distinct stages, each presenting unique terrain and challenges. Runners must complete the race within the 13-hour cut-off.
01
Forest Descent
0–35km — Begin at the Magoebas base camp and descend into the ancient indigenous forest. Technical single track through dense canopy, river crossings, and waterfall passages. Elevation loss of 800m followed by a 600m climb.
02
Mountain Traverse
35–70km — The crux of the race. Exposed ridgeline running with panoramic views of the Limpopo valley. Multiple summit ascents totalling 1,800m of climbing. Night running section with mandatory headlamp.
03
Valley Return
70–100km — The final push. Descend from the mountains through plantation trails and bushveld back to base camp. Rolling terrain with a final 400m climb before the finish. Aid stations every 8km.
